Love-‘bots: future robots could become ideal lovers, experts say

Although some people might find the idea of love with a machine repulsive, experts predict that as the technology advances and robots become more human-like, we will view our silicon cousins in a friendlier light. As the future unfolds, robots will fill more roles as family caregivers, household servants, and voice-enabled avatarsthat manage our driverless cars, automated homes, and entertainment systems
Today's machines can vacuum homes, stand in as pets, explore planets, and assist in surgeries. Future 'bots will allow handicapped patients to control prosthetic limbs; and latest drone technologies include swarms of mosquito-sized flying 'bots that could search collapsed buildings for trapped victims; or wield crippling stings to terrorists or criminals holding victims hostage. However, some fear security concerns.
Technologies to build robots that perceive their surroundings, move by themselves, and perform tasks without human oversight should reach fruition by mid-2030s, experts say. By mid-2040s, these marvels could exhibit a human-like mind, with fleshy skin; and possess traits vital for a loving partner.

Carnegie Mellon's Hans Moravec believes that by late 2020s, we will create robots in humanoid form. These 'bots would 'drink wine' for fuel, breathe air like us, and appear amazingly human-like.

تل أبيب والرياض لم تؤكدا زيارة الوفد السعودي لإسرائيل رسمياً
دبي، الإمارات العربية المتحدة (CNN)-- كشفت مصادر إسرائيلية الاثنين، أن وفداً عسكرياً من المملكة العربية السعودية قام بزيارة سرية إلى الدولة العبرية مؤخراً، بهدف إجراء مباحثات تتعلق بتطورات ملف البرنامج النووي الإيراني.
وذكرت الإذاعة الإسرائيلية الأمير سلمان بن سلطان بن عبدالعزيز، نائب وزير الدفاع في المملكة السعودية، وشقيق رئيس الاستخبارات، الأمير بندر بن سلطان، قام مؤخراً بزيارة سرية إلى إسرائيل، برفقة اثنين من الضباط السعوديين.
استند موقع "صوت إسرائيل" في تقريره إلى ما أوردته صحيفة "المنار" المقدسية، نقلاً عن "مصدر موثوق به"، فيما لم يتسن لـCNN بالعربية الحصول على تأكيد رسمي، سواء من المسؤولين في إسرائيل أو في المملكة العربية السعودية.
وأضاف المصدر أن "الوفد السعودي التقى قيادات أمنية وعسكرية إسرائيلية، وأن الامير سلمان قام برفقة ضابط كبير من هيئة أركان جيش الدفاع، بزيارة لإحدى القواعد العسكرية الإسرائيلية"، بحسب ما جاء في التقرير.
وفيما أشارت الإذاعة العبرية إلى أنه لم يمكن تأكيد النبأ من مصادر أخرى، إلا أنها ذكرت أن أنباء صحفية كانت قد تحدثت مؤخراً، عن عقد لقاءات سرية بين مسؤولين سعوديين وإسرائيليين لبحث الملف النووي الإيراني.
وكانت الرياض قد نفت في وقت سابق، تقريراً نشرته صحيفة "صنداي تايمز" البريطانية الشهر الماضي، أشارت فيه إلى وجود تنسيق بين المخابرات السعودية والإسرائيلية، من أجل التحضير لضربة ضد برنامج إيران النووي.
Google has purchased the cutting-edge robotics firm which supplies mobile research robots for the Pentagon. The tech giant is keeping secret what it will produce with the acquired technology.
Boston Dynamics, an engineering company that designs robots like BigDog, Cheetah, WildCat, and Atlas, is now the eighth robotic company to join Google’s ranks in the last six months, the company confirmed Friday, according to The New York Times.
The robotics company - based in Waltham, Massachusetts - is known for its fascinating robots that have a sense of balance and can walk and run on almost any kind of terrain. Boston Dynamics was established in 1992 and is known for supplying robotics technology mostly for Pentagon clients, including the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).
Google has so far refused to reveal what it is planning to do with the new technology, but the internet giant’s robotic efforts, headed by Andy Rubin, will certainly have impressive capability due to the new acquisition. The company also said it will keep the financial aspect of the deal confidential.
The tech giant said that it intends to honor the existing military contracts the firm has, but does not plan to become a military contractor.
As of now, Boston Dynamics has a $10.8 million contract with DARPA to supply several humanoid Atlas robots. The machines are set to participate in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, which awards the winning maker with a $2 million prize. The contest evaluates robots’ ability to function during natural disasters and catastrophes such as an earthquake or a nuclear power meltdown.
“Competitions like the DARPA Robotics Challenge stretch participants to try to solve problems that matter and we hope to learn from the teams’ insights around disaster relief,” Rubin, the man behind the development of the Android mobile operating system, said in a statement released by Google.
Fast and creepy: BigDog, WildCat, Cheetah The company’s robots are famous for their abilities to walk through terrain which is difficult even for humans. One of its four-legged robots, BigDog, can climb hills, walk through snow, travel through ice, and remain standing even after being kicked by a human, according to a video of the robot released in 2008.
One of the company’s recent creations is WildCat, a four-legged outdoor runner capable of rising, turning, and reaching running speeds of up to 16 miles per hour (mph) on flat ground. Boston Dynamics released a video of the robot in October.
The robotics firm has also designed robots that can climb walls and trees, as well as run faster than any human being on earth. A video recorded the Cheetah robot running 29mph faster than the fastest human, Usain Bolt. The Jamaican sprinter’s top speed is 27.78 mph (44.7km/h).
Other robotics companies purchased by Google are based in the US and Japan, and focus on software for advanced robotic arms, grasping technology, and computer vision.

أتلانتا، الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية (CNN) -- استحوذ عملاق تقنية البحث، غوغل"، على شركة "ديبمايند" البريطانية المتخصصة في الذكاء الصناعي، ضمن حملة شراء تقوم بها الشركة الأمريكية مؤخراً.
وأكد الناطق باسم غوغل عملية الاستحواذ، إلا أنه رفض الكشف عن قيمة الصفقة، التي قدرها موقع "ري/كود" المختص بالتقنية، بـ400 مليون دولار.
وتقدم "ديبمايند" نفسها على أنها شركة متخصصة في أحدث تقنيات الذكاء الاصطناعي والروبوتات والأنظمة الذكية.
وتدخل عملية الشراء الأخيرة في إطار حملة قامت فيها "غوغل"، وخلال عام، بالاستحواذ على 7 شركات مختصة بصناعة الروبوتات، وذلك في سياق مساعيها لتطوير نطاق تخصصها في مجال الذكاء الاصطناعي والروبوتات الآلية.
ومؤخرا، استحوذت "غوغل" على بوسطن دايناميك" الهندسية المتخصصة في تطوير روبوتات على شكل حيوانات خارقة السرعة، وللشركة، ومقرها ماساشوستس، صلات قوية بالجيش الأمريكي.
وتعرف "بوسطن دايناميك" بصناعتها لروبوتات تتميز بقدرات خارقة على القفز والسرعة، وتعمل عن كثب مع الجيش الأمريكي لإنتاج روبوتات متطورة، كما أنها على لاقة وثيقة بـ"وكالة مشاريع الأبحاث الدفاعية المتقدمة، أو ما يعرف اختصارا بـ"داربا."
