The latest project from the futurists at DARPA takes a detour from the agency’s typical dabblings in autonomous robots and artificially intelligent computers to focus on the health of actual humans.
The agency announced its latest moonshot initiative today, a $70 million project to develop a new implantable electronic device that can be used to treat some of the mental disorders plaguing the US military.
The ambitious goal is to create a medical device within five years that can be implanted in the skull to monitor, analyze, and respond to real-time information on the brain, somewhat like a pacemaker for grey matter.
That new level of insight into the human mind could lead to more effective treatments for neurological and psychiatric disorders, researchers hope.
The Defense Department has good reason to devote such a large chunk of change to advancing neuroscience. Today, the leading cause of soldiers’ hospital stays isn’t physical injuries, but mental conditions like post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse, DARPA said in its announcement.
The agency is turning to technology to better understand these problems. The project is part of the White House’s BRAIN initiative to research the mind to uncover new treatments for mental health.
President Obama’s budgeted $100 million for the first year, half of which will go to DARPA.
DARPA is hoping to either improve on current ”deep brain stimulation” technology, or develop new ways to do it better. Doctors already use deep brain stimulation to treat certain neurological disorders like Parkinson’s disease, some 100,000 Parkinson’s patients in the world have chips in their brain today, the agency said.
It works by sending electrical impulses to the affected areas of the brain to regulate abnormal impulses caused by the disorder. Researchers are also testing electronic chips to treat a number of other mental conditions, like depression, OCD, Tourette’s, and epilepsy.
But the current technology is limited. The chips can’t monitor how effective the stimulation treatment is; they can’t “read” brain signals.
That’s a hurdle for treating complex conditions like depression that’s don’t have obvious biological indicators.
And while neurotechnology is advancing quickly, the human mind is still shrouded in mystery.
Researchers today rely on a fuzzy understanding of the brain and trial-and-error approach to treat disease.
“We’re talking about a whole systems approach to the brain, not a disease-by-disease examination of a single process or a subset of processes,” DARPA program manager Justin Sanchez said in the announcement.
Pulling it off will require generating complex models of the brain systems. Luckily, scientists from the government and private companies have been on a tear in recent years trying to better understand the inner-workings of the mind.
The White House’s BRAIN initiative is just one of the big-budget, large-scale attempts to map the brain currently underway, and the military has invested heavily in a wide range of neurotechnology.
Researchers are also collecting unprecedented real-time information on the brain from EEG technology that essentially read the mind and transmit that data back to a computer for analysis.
These ”brain hacking” headpieces are becoming more advanced, increasingly commercialized and affordable, and are starting to be used to help treat mental conditions, namely ADHD.

An embeddable chip that has the potential to rid you of keys and instantly unlock your phone is now available on Indiegogo.
The xNT is an implantable NFC chip that allows you to unlock doors, your phone and compute with just your hand.
Keys have been a necessary evil for the last century or so, but what if you could unlock your house, your phone or you computer with just your hand? That is what the xNT will enable using near field communication (NFC).
Produced by biohacking and NFC-firm Dangerous Things, the xNT is the world’s first NFC-compliant radio frequency identity tag that can be implanted inside your body.
Measuring 2 x 12mm the NFC tag is encased in a biologically resistant glass capsule and is looking for $8,000 in funding on Indiegogo to start mass production, with pledges of $99 and up winning you your very own xNT pre-loaded into an injection tube ready for implantation.
NFC works by emitting a low power radio-frequency signature that can be recognised by sensors, which can then trigger pre-programmed events. NFC is currently used by mobile devices for one-tap Bluetooth pairing, as well as the transfer of photos and even payments.
Once implanted in your hand, the NFC chip can be programmed for just about anything, including opening locks, starting your car, unlocking your computer or phone, or as a one-tap digital business card.
The chip has to be implanted directly into your body, normally between the thumb and first finger, which might put people off the xNT over something like an NFC band or bracelet.
NFC also hasn’t seen massive uptake to date, but that may change in the near future, as NFC payments and one-tap functions become more commonplace.
To get the most out of an xNT at the moment, the user will have to create custom solutions and won’t be able to rely on off-the-shelf devices for the most part.
Having a programmable NFC chip permanently implanted inside your hand has the potential to rid you of the need for keys, a wallet and to trigger all sorts of labour and time-saving automated processes.
The ability to instantly unlock a phone or computer alone would see the chip being used tens of times a day on their own, which combined with almost limitless identification possibilities could make the nXT invaluable.
The implantable xNT chip certainly holds a lot of potential, and could be the tip of the iceberg for body modification, if you can get over the surgical procedure required to actually fit the chip.
Biohacker and transhumanist Tim Cannon may be the first known human to implant a computer chip capable of transmitting biometrical data to an android device.
During an interview with Motherboard Magazine, the “Circadia 1.0,” an open-source device capable of recording and transmitting body temperature over Bluetooth, was successfully implanted into Cannon’s left forearm.
Built by Cannon and his business associates at Grindhouse Wetware, a company focused on “merging man and machine,” the large chip was implanted by body modifier Steve Haworth without the use of anesthesia. The battery powered device, enclosed in a protective case, is charged wirelessly through the use of a charging coil placed against the skin.
“Instead of taking snapshots of your health by visiting a doctor, you can aggregate weeks or months of medical data that you can store for your personal viewing. Messages, warnings, or texts from your android phone to Circadia implant can be displayed via LEDs through your skin,” the device description reads.
Cannon says the device will allow him to study what causes his temperature to fall or rise, with a later upgrade configuration allowing text messages to be sent if his temperature begins reaching 100 degrees °F.
“The human body is really really failing in almost every way,” Cannon says. “I want to live to be thousands of years old. I don’t want to die. I don’t know why anybody would.”
Leaders in the transhumanist movement such as Google’s director of engineering Ray Kurzweil predict that the human body will be completely replaced by machines by the end of the century, with human minds uploaded to computers by the year 2045.
Others such as Russian millionaire Dmitry Itskov believe that immortality through placing human brains in controllable robot bodies, also referred to as the “singularity,” will be reached in as little as 25 years.
During the Global Futures 2045 International Congress in New York last June, Kurzweil laid out his predictions of the march towards singularity in detail.
“We’re going to become increasingly non-biological to the point where the non-biological part dominates and the biological part is not important any more. In fact the non-biological part – the machine part – will be so powerful it can completely model and understand the biological part,” Kurzweil said. “So even if that biological part went away it wouldn’t make any difference.”
While the push towards immortality is praised by some, many see a much darker outcome, with such future technologies controlled by a wealthy few as average humans become increasingly irrelevant to the “transhumanist utopia.”
“While everyone would welcome some of the technological advancements predicted by Kurzweil, most notably the virtual elimination of all diseases, his fixation with cheating death by achieving technological singularity has several dark spiritual and practical overtones that have not been properly debated,” Infowars writer Paul Joseph Watson notes. “Moral considerations are once again being cast aside in the feverish pursuit of technological progress at all costs.”
The U.S. government now plans to spend $70 million over the next five years to fund the Systems-Based Neurotechnology for Emerging Therapies project, a surgically implanted brain pacemaker that will monitor the mental health and brainwaves of soldiers and veterans in real time.

مثل هذه الرقاقات التي يمكنها أن ترسل البيانات يمكنها أيضا أن تستقبل فماذا ستستقبل ؟ بالطبع ستستقبل البيانات التي تخدم الدجال وتساعده في السيطرة على أكبر قدر من العقول
ولكن الخطوة الأولى : هي زرع هذه الرقاقات في أكبر قدر ممكن من البشر تحت أي مسمى ... ولتكن الرغبة في حياة صحية والسعي نحو الخلود هو ما سيجعل أكثر الناس لا يمانعون من زرع هذه الرقاقات داخل أجسادهم وهم في غفلة عما يراد بهم

تطوير قلوب صناعية باستخدام تقنية "3D" خلال 10 سنوات
نموذج أولى للقلب الصناعى المراد تصنيعه باستخدام التقنية الجديدة
فى سبق طبى كبير، كشف فريق من العلماء والباحثين بجامعة لويزفيل الأمريكية أنه سيكون بإمكانهم تطوير قلوب صناعية بشرية كاملة، باستخدام تقنية الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد "3D"، خلال العشر سنوات القادمة، واستخدامها فى عمليات زراعة القلب داخل الإنسان.
وأشار الباحثون إلى أنهم تمكنوا بالفعل الآن من تطوير نموذج للشريان التاجى باستخدام الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد، لافتين إلى أن القلوب المصنعة ستشمل عضلات القلب والأوعية الدموية والصمامات والأنسجة التى ترسل الإشارات الكهربية.
وأضاف الباحثون، أن عملية تصنيع القلب الواحد باستخدام هذه التقنية المتطورة سوف تستغرق 3 ساعات تقريباً، ثم الانتظار بعدها لمدة أسبوع حتى يتطور القلب بشكل كامل ويصبح صالحاً للزراعة داخل أجساد المرضى، والذين يخضعون قبل ذلك لعمليات جراحية يحصل خلالها الأطباء على بعض الأنسجة، منهم مثل الدهون، وتضاف إلى محاليل خاصة لتستخدم كسائل فى عملية الطباعة وتطوير القلب الجديد، وبالتالى لن يرفضه الجسم لأنه تم تصنيعه من خلاياه.
ويأمل العلماء أن تصبح الآلات المستخدمة لطباعة القلوب ثلاثية الأبعاد "3D" متوفرة داخل المستشفيات كما هو الحال مع الأجهزة المستخدمة لإجراء الأشعة السينية "X-ray".
نشرت هذه النتائج مؤخراً بصحيفة "ديلى ميل" البريطانية، وذلك على موقعها الإلكترونى فى الثانى والعشرين من شهر نوفمبر الجارى.
جدير بالذكر أن الطباعة ثلاثية الأبعاد "3D" بكل بساطة تصميم وصناعة مجسمات حقيقية وأشكال هندسية ثلاثية الأبعاد من معادن مختلفة، وذلك بواسطة آلة مصممة خصيصاً لهذا الغرض تستقى أوامرها من برنامج إلكترونى مزود بالمعلومات والتفاصيل الدقيقة لكل طبقة من المجسم المراد تصميمه، وأطلقت على هذه العملية اسم "الطباعة" لأنه يُنتج عشرات أو مئات النسخ المتجانسة من المجسمات آلياً، بدقة عالية للغاية ودون أى اختلاف بينها كالورق الذى يتم طبعه تماماً.
